Vadoma and Thulvriess do a few more checks, then the group moves on.

A shapeless mess of sheets and pillows piles atop two plain beds in the next room. Bold chalk letters high on the opposite wall proclaim this to be “Brenton and Debis’s Room.” Vadoma finds a pair of carved wooden knights in the tangle of sheets at the foot of the southern bed. "I wonder if Brenton's been looking for those?" Endrit wonders on seeing the discovery. "He's one of the children at the chapel."

Human-shaped carnage covers the bed, remains of a patient trapped here and set upon by hunting ghouls in the next room. The window is broken. Endrit's sharp eye spies a gold signet ring with a holly and hawk emblem, which Vadoma identifies as belonging to the Millair family of Redleaf Lake.

Two hallways meet here beneath a lofty ceiling. High windows, alive with the nauseating fog beyond, give the space an airy feel. A portion of the western hallway has collapsed, blocking it with tons of rubble.

A ghoul is crouched near the rubble, slowly pulling out rocks and other debris. It doesn't notice the party, not until Junmai rushes from behind it and bisects it in a single stroke of Dragonclaw. ”Ha! What a weakling,” Junmai says, cleaning the sword. ”Milksop rabble, that’s all that was.”

With that, the party decides to move on. They find another hallway of doors, with apparently a large room at the end of the hall. Doors must be opened first, however. The first door opens to a room with chipped white paint peeling from the battered frames of a row of identical beds. Dingy white curtains separate each bed, but offer only the illusion of privacy.

As they enter the room, they spot a man lying on one of the beds, with padded manacles and leather restraints holding him on the table. He is thrashing on the bed, screaming. Endrit is quickly alarmed on realizing the man is asleep, and goes to shake him. ”It’s not real!” he says to the man loudly, hoping that’s true.

"No! Not again!" the man screams as Endrit tries to wake him. "Keep away! I don't want anything from you! Get away from me, bastard!" After a couple moments of continued screaming, the man shrieks and ceases thrashing.

Endrit furrows his eyebrows together as he noticed something odd about the man breathing out, but he focuses more pressingly on checking the pulse. ”He’s gone,” Endrit says quietly, after a moment. ”Some yellow vapor left his mouth as he passed.”

As the group turns away to investigate the room, a convulsing comes from behind them. The body on the table starts shaking violently, and his flesh begins to melt away in patches, leaving a sunken-out face and a ragged body - clearly identifiable as a ghoul. His eyes snap open, and he begins to struggle against his restraints.

Recognizing the man is now worse than dead, Endrit quickly steps back with his scimitar and ends the ghoul's existence before the restraints fail. A small frown crosses Thulvreiss's lips at the sight. "A shame. I would have appreciated the opportunity to study him more closely. He could have provided greater insights on what precisely is going on here."

Strangely enough, watching the entire scene actually comforts the Kobold, if just a little. The small dragonlet raises a claw to its cheek, snout screwed up in thoughtful disgust.

"So, just like sick. Ssick, Kobold know what to do now."

Sick gets copious amounts of fire, gets locked room, done and dusted. Simple, no need for all this cloak nonsense.

With that settled, the group moves on to the next room. They find worn old chairs and small tables set with the scattered pieces of simple games lay scattered throughout this room. A serving hatch in the north wall opens into a darkened space beyond. Vast glass windows dominate the eastern walls, beyond which a jaundiced kaleidoscope swirls hypnotically. A coppery smell permeates the room, and to the west stands a wall of red. Junmai and Vadoma notice a trail of blood leading from a wheelchair by the windows towards the crimson wall, and in the wheelchair sits an elderly, rotund woman with a gaping wound in her chest. Thulvreiss holds up a hand for the group to stop. "Wait. This room is haunted. The woman was either terrified or deeply attached to something before she died, and if you step in the blood you could be swept towards the wall. We need to give medicine or a healing potion to the corpse in the chair," he directs, analyzing the scene quickly.

The other medicine having been left at the camp, the group decides to use a healing potion for the haunt. The hole in the woman's chest slowly closes as the potion pours down her throat, and the blood stops flowing. The wall of blood on the west side of the room subsides, revealing a short passage. This clearly being the most intriguing path forward, they go into this passage.

Racks of cleaning supplies and bins of stained laundry stew here, filling the close space with a unique, acrid reek.

The body of a woman garbed in orderly's scrubs lies in this room, seemingly having bled out here. On her person is a suit of studded leather armor, a cloak enchanted with magical resistance, and two potions clearly labelled, one for additional strength and one for protection from evil.

The group goes through the remaining door in the dayroom, entering a pitch-dark room. The sound of sobbing can be heard throughout the room, and as the door closes behind them, a voice calls out.

"Brenton? Wake up, Brenton!"

After finding themselves unable to light any torches to dispel the darkness, and Endrit being attacked with the result of him being unable to speak, the group decides to head back to camp. The guards let them back in without any issue.

When they return to the camp, Endrit gives the guards a pleasant smile and a wave, but waits until he’s past them to try to speak. His test is meant to be quietly talking to himself, but all that comes out is a cough. Sighing softly, the suddenly mute man tries to determine which of his allies is best to speak with Tolman or Brenton to learn more of the possible haunt’s history. Junmai had recognized the boy’s name, so Endrit taps the swordman’s shoulder and gestures towards the children once he has his attention.

"We ran into a really dark room out there. One so dark it couldn't even be lit up by magic, and we also found some toys that seemed to belong to one of the kids here, uh... Brenton. There was a voice calling out for him in the darkness. And then the darkness started to hurt us. We were wondering if maybe you knew about something going on with them." Junmai recollects, wondering if he the asylum was rubbing off on him. This all sounded insane.

Tolman bites his lip in thought. "I'm not sure what that would be," he says, "but I could tell you a bit more about Brenton. Maybe that would help. Brenton and his brother, Debis, were both admitted here after the deaths of their parents seven months ago. Brenton's been recovering normally, but Debis suffered from regular night terrors. The only thing that would reassure him would be waking up and finding the shadow lantern that his parents gave him still lit." Tolman glances over towards Brenton, who is currently quietly sitting and watching the other children play, holding onto the shadow lantern. "That said, Debis hasn't been seen since the uprising."
